Yes, you must have a valid referral to see Dr. Gary Nattrass. Dr. Gary cannot see your child without one. If you don’t have a referral yet, please contact your GP to request one. If you have any questions about the referral process, feel free to reach out to us.
You can book an appointment by calling 03 9322 3360. Gary practices out of the Victorian Orthopaedic Centre in North Melbourne, Cabrini Hospital in Malvern and Orthokids in Frankston. You can be seen at your desired location.

At your first visit with Gary, he will thoroughly examine the area of concern and review relevant medical records. Additional imaging may be necessary to determine a precise diagnosis, some of which can be performed in clinic.
Gary will make every effort to see you as soon as possible. If your appointment is related to a fracture or trauma injury, please inform our team so that we can prioritise your appointment accordingly.
For existing patients, our team will arrange necessary follow-up appointments during your visit. If you need to schedule your own appointment, please don’t hesitate to give us a call on 03 9322 3360.
It is important to bring your medicare card, referral from your general practitioner or specialist (if not already received), as well as any previous imaging such as x-rays, ultrasounds, CT scans, or MRI scans. If you do not have hard copies of any previous imaging, please inform our team, as we may be able to access your radiology provider online.
The initial consultation costs $280 and a review consultation costs $180. If you are eligible for the Medicare rebate you may receive approximately $84 from your initial consultation and $42 from your review consultation. Please note, we do not bulk bill.
No. Lake Imaging (Victorian Orthopaedic Centre, North Melbourne) and Cabrini Medical Imaging (Cabrini Hospital, Malvern) will issue an invoice to you directly for any x-ray/imaging performed at our clinic. This is not included in your consultation fee.
Gary is a private provider. In most cases, patients without private health insurance are encouraged to seek care through the specialist clinics at The Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne.
Our Hip Clinic offers a unique ‘one stop’ multidisciplinary approach to assessing and managing hip dysplasia in infants and young children, at Cabrini Hospital in Malvern. Babies can be assessed clinically, imaged by ultrasound and bracing treatment can commence (if required) all in the initial appointment.
Many bone and joint injuries require assessment and management by an orthopaedic specialist to ensure that they can heal correctly. Our Fracture clinic offers urgent appointments at the Victorian Orthopaedic Centre in North Melbourne, where we have a dedicated treatment/plaster room, and x-ray facilities on site. If your GP or local emergency department has recommended specialist review for your child’s fracture, please don’t hesitate to call us on 03 9322 3360.
Children (newborn – 2 years old) do not have to be formally diagnosed with hip dysplasia to be assessed in the Hip Clinic. If your baby has had signs of possible hip dysplasia reported on ultrasound or x-ray, or has dislocated/dislocatable hips, please call us on 03 9322 3360 to discuss booking an appointment.
Gary performs surgery at Cabrini Hospital in Malvern. He will determine the urgency of your surgery and arrange a booking as he deems appropriate. If there is no urgency, Gary and his team will work to find a time that suits you best.
The duration of the surgery and the time spent in hospital will depend on the specific surgery you receive. You will have the opportunity to discuss the surgery with Gary during your consultation.
Before your surgery, you will receive an estimated cost for the surgical/gap fees. We advise you to check with your health insurer to determine if you are covered. Additionally, please be aware that services such as anaesthesia, surgical assistance, radiology, pharmacy, pathology, orthotics, and physiotherapy will incur additional fees.
No, Medicare will not cover any portion of your ‘Gap Fee’.
Gary would be happy to provide a second opinion. Please ensure you bring all relevant information including previous x-rays, results, surgery reports and discharge summaries to your consultation.
